The wagon
came to a sudden stop and I jerked up.
I sat there on the dusty wood planks realizing where I was. ÒHow ya doinÕ?Ó a soft voice came from
the far corner of the wagon. I
turned my head to look at my mom, ÒHi mama,Ó I said back to her. I turned to crawl to the back of the
wagon. I poked my head out to look.
I took a deep breath and inhaled the fresh air. We were surrounded by tall green grass
all around us. It looked like a
sea. The wind rippled the grass like waves. The grass seemed still, calm, quiet but it moved. It moved like it was one with the
wind. It moved like it was an
ocean on a calm day - still, calm, quiet and graceful. I stuck my head back in
the wagon and folded my legs. I
looked around the old dark wagon.
Boxes upon boxes scattered around the perimeter of the wagon enclosing
our stuff we needed for the trip.
I sat there wondering what California would be like and what our house
was going to be like. Daddy told
me how hard it would be on this trip.
Mostly about the changes we had to make. I then realized what I was in store for.
